5 Signs That Your Sump Pump Needs To Be Replaced Or Repaired
May 4, 2021
A Quick Checklist For Spring Plumbing Maintenance
When spring is approaching, you definitely need to think about your plumbing system in addition to spring cleaning. If you properly maintain your plumbing, you can lower the chances of serious issues and expensive damage. Here is a quick checklist for spring plumbing maintenance that can help save money and stress.
If your spring plumbing checklist reveals leaks, slow drains, toilet issues, water heater concerns, sump pump problems, or outdoor plumbing damage, visit our Suffolk County plumbing services page to learn how VP Plumbing & Heating can help.
Look For Leaks In Your Piping
Thoroughly check your faucets to make sure there are no leaks or water escaping from the connections. If you find leaks, make repairs as soon as possible. This can help lower your water bill and prevent water damage. You should also check for visible pipe leaks, including areas in the basement, under sinks, and around exposed plumbing.
Look For Toilet Leaks
Check for leaks in your toilet tank and bowl. If you do not see any visible leaks, add about six drops of red food dye into the toilet tank. Then check to see if the color appears inside the toilet bowl. If the dye shows up in the bowl after about an hour, there may be a leak that should be checked by a professional.
Pay Attention To Your Appliances
Check the water supply hoses for appliances such as your dishwasher, ice maker, washing machine, and other connected fixtures. If the hoses are old, weak, cracked, or bulging, replace them before they fail. Stainless steel braided hoses are often a more reliable option and can help reduce the risk of bursting.
You should also check your washing machine’s lint trap to make sure it is clean and that lint is not getting into your plumbing. A mesh lint trap or similar screen on the drain hose can help reduce buildup.
Check Your Water Heater
Modern water heaters are often more energy efficient than older units, so it is worth checking the age and condition of your system. If your water heater is more than 15 years old, it may be time to consider replacement.
No matter how old your water heater is, there are steps you can take to help it operate efficiently. One important step is making sure the temperature is set to 120 degrees or lower. This can help reduce energy use and lower the risk of scalding.
Make sure there are no stored items too close to the water heater. Keeping the area clear helps with access, safety, and system performance.
Test The Sump Pump
Test your sump pump to make sure it is operating properly. You can do this by pouring water into the sump pit. The pump should turn on, remove the water, and shut off without issue. If it does not activate or struggles to drain the water, the system should be checked by a professional.
Outdoor Drainage & Plumbing
Take time to check the drains and pipes around your property. Make sure exterior drains are clear and free of debris. Check outdoor faucets to confirm they are working properly and look for leaks, weak water pressure, or water pooling near the foundation. If you notice problems, have the faucets or piping repaired before the issue gets worse.
